Earlier this month we had the opportunity to spend a weekend at the Chesterfield Hotel right here in beautiful Palm Beach. One of our favorite classic boutique hotels on the island, the Chesterfield has a long history of excellent service and unrivaled sophistication.
Part of Red Carnation Hotels, the Chesterfield, like many of it's sister hotels in Great Britain, Switzerland and South Africa, has a proud heritage. Built in as The Lido-Venice in 1926 and later renamed The Vineta in 1928, the hotel was designed to be a European style bed and breakfast, something you can still see and experience to this day. With 52 rooms luxuriously decorated, a full restaurant and bar, tropical pool and private parlor for tea time, this elegant hotel made the perfect hideaway for our in-town getaway.
Upon arrival it is immediately obvious that the Chesterfield prides themselves on service that is both personalized and attentive. From the minute we stepped out of our car the staff were polite and helpful. Check-in was a simple, smooth transaction that lasted no longer than three minutes. We were swiftly guided from the valet stand with a bell cart through the small courtyard just beyond the iron gates at the front entrance. Clad with Venetian glass chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and hallways, beautiful trees and orchids, the courtyard immediately gives the impression of being in a tranquil caribbean island.
Just beyond the courtyard lies the lobby, where we were excited to learn that the manager kindly upgraded us to a suite. Our bellman patiently waited for us to sign in before escorting us to our room. The suite was elegant and tasteful, complete with a sitting room, full bedroom, two bathrooms and a view of the palm tree lined street below. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and the staff thoughtfully left a fruit basket, chocolates and a note welcoming us to the hotel. With plenty of closet space to put our things and plush towels to freshen up, we set out to explore the hotel!
In the private enclave between the exterior walls of the hotel lies a quiet Mediterranean-style courtyard. Complete with a swimming pool and hot tub surrounded by lush foliage, bubbling fountains and beautiful bright pink umbrellas, it was the perfect place to relax. The space was well guarded, surrounded by lofty hedges, and we found ourselves dozing off in the comfortable lounge chairs almost immediately.
Location, Location, Location!
The Chesterfield is located in the heart of a quiet residential section of Palm Beach, just two blocks away from Worth Avenue. Much of the famed shopping, dining and entertainment of Palm Beach are within walking distance, as is the midtown beach, the Society of the Four Arts library and sculpture garden, and the Town of Palm Beach's centennial fountain. It's also near to the Royal Poinciana Plaza, which has recently been restored and boasts some of our favorite shops and dining destinations.
The Leopard Lounge
The perfect end to a restful and quiet afternoon by the pool is, of course, a delicious dinner. Upine entering the lobby you are immediately transfixed by the sounds on an elegant piano beckoning you to dinner. Whether you stop in to dine, or for one of their famed classic cocktails, the Leopard Lounge is an experience in it of its own. Immediately upon entering it is clear that this is yet another fun and eclectic space hidden within the hotel. Clad a dark, moody tones, the restaurant boasts black lacquer walls, dramatic brass jaguar head fixtures, lustrous hand painted murals, and of course, leopard print. Complete with a baby grand piano and live music every night, the hotel restaurant and bar honor a well appreciated novelty of a bygone era; dinner and dancing.
The menu is well rounded, boasting classic and creative dishes like the crab cakes and caprese burrata salad to start, and filet mignon, lobster risotto, and a New Zealand rack of lamb as entree options. Before being seated we highly recommend that you take time to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail from the bar. While waiting between meals, it's also fun to join others on the dance floor!
The Leopard Lounge serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, either inside or in the quiet courtyard just out front.
Tea for Two (or more)!
Of course, our favorite dining experience at the hotel is a tea in the library. While authentic tea time is something of a novelty here in south Florida, the United Kingdom-based Red Carnation Hotel group are experts. Taking care to recreate a traditional British afternoon tea session for its guests, The Chesterfield staff regularly serves up a delicious spread of scrumptious house made finger sandwiches, delicate petit four, warm handmade scones, looseleaf tea and so much more.
This unique and exquisite experience is not to be missed! The Chesterfield offers several Afternoon Tea experiences (see menu below). It is served daily from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Weather permitting, you can opt for tea in their lovely and lush courtyard. Although not required, reservations are recommended, call (561) 659-5800.
